Character Folder, First Page
Last month I posted my hand-crafted Basic Dungeons & Dragons character sheet. What triggered the creation of that sheet was the idea of building a character sheet in landscape instead of portrait format, and I was quite happy with the results.
But now I’m poking around with other design alternatives, including working on index-card sheets and a 3-panel pamphlet sheet. The first step in the redesign of my sheet however is based on a frequent comment I got about the landscape sheet – why not make it a digest-sized folder instead of a landscape sheet?
So today, just over a month later, I unveil the latest Dyson Logos production – the B/X Character Folder.
Because it is a Basic character sheet, there really isn’t a lot of additional material needed on the sheet proper to push it from a single side of paper to a two-sided design. In the end, I ended up leaving a majority of the internal sections blank, like in the old AD&D1e Permanent Character Folder where it was assumed that you would label the various sections as needed.
You can download the 3 meg PDF (sorry, but as a hand-tooled masterwork character sheet, it is entirely graphical and thus a fairly large file) by using one of the three following links:
- Folder-Style B/X Dungeons & Dragons Character Sheet with lines
- Folder-Style B/X Dungeons & Dragons Character Sheet without lines
- Folder-Style Labyrinth Lord Character Sheet without lines
The “without lines” versions get rid of all the lines to write information on, leaving you with nice blank boxes to work with so you can use whatever size hand writing you want.
And if you are playing a level 1 fighter, and don’t need a full folder for background information and so on? Print out the without lines version but only the first page, on both sides of the paper. Then cut the two sides apart and you end up with two half-sized character sheets, double sided.
Don’t forget, I’m also running a poll to see what format of character sheet you prefer – and maybe I’ll try my hand at the format you prefer next.

Thanks so much for these, they are going to get a lot of use in my gaming group.
what a solid idea, i love it.
These are really great!
I like the blank areas that can be used for notes, names of hirelings, etc. Very cool.
Really good looking stuff!
Personally I have started to use landscape format for more and more of my sheets. That way I can get as much information as possibly up at the top of the sheet, and if you use one piece of data before another you can put them from left to right, just like you read it.
How about a version for ascending AC? 🙂
Uhmmm… Wouldn’t that just mean having to put the “to hit” numbers in the opposite order? Or do you ascending AC types do it the d20 way and have it start at 10 and go up from there?
I’m not familiar with any of the games from this era that use ascending AC.
im sorry, but traditional dnd makes much more sence, wheres the atk? wheres the aim? i dont understand how its possable to enjoy gaming when you take from its most important details, theres not even any saves, pois misc magic and death,im just ganna back away and leave, nice and slow…happy gaming
You have completely confused me. All the saves are there, this is a character sheet for traditional D&D. Atk and Aim aren’t stats I’m familiar with from playing D&D for 31 years.
I love a lot of other games that don’t have these items (saving throws, attack rolls, and so on), but this particular character sheet is definitely aimed at classic 1981-style D&D.
Don’t worry Dyson. I am completely lost as well…
Great work! I would love to see a Castles & Crusades version. The inside space that isn’t really used for B/X would be perfect for the few additional things needed for C&C.
Love it.
The QuickStart rules would tell you pretty much everything you need to know (http://www.trolllord.com/downloads/pdfs/cnc_qs.pdf). I think the official sheet is way too busy for the elegance of the game (http://www.trolllord.com/downloads/pdfs/ccchasheet.pdf).
Thanks.
Love your work Dyson, we’ve been using the one-sided version in my home campaign and everyone loves them. I hate to be a bother, but I have to ask — is there no version with the LL style saving throws and lines?
Hey, so I’m just getting into LL and stumbled across your site. I absolutely love your sheets, especially the little folder-style ones. Personally, I’d love to see a LL one with the lines, etc.
Any chance you might ever do one with some of the extra fields for the stuff in the AEC? We’re starting a game using the core and AEC this summer, and I’d love to use your sheets.
Forgive me if you’ve already done this sort of thing, and I just haven’t found it yet.
These are great sheets. I am trying to modify it a bit in order to use it for S&W (single saving throw). Is the typeface hand-drawn, or is it available somewhere for me to download?
Thanks in advance!

Wow!Theses are great. We just used them in a game at TotalCon with our kids! I am now going to use them for our home campaign! Thank you for keeping old-school D&D rocking!
Great work. Thanks for making these available.
Just discovered these myself. Absolutely love them! Going to use them with my kids and their friends playing Basic Fantasy.
Here is my Basic Fantasy Mod of your Character Sheet Folder. I have supplied two PDFs, one has the 2nd page inverted in case your printer is uncooperative like mine:

Nicely done!
Mind if I host a copy on the blog?
Please do! Its your intellectual property after all. I’m just hackin’ away 🙂
I wish I could say I have used it, but I have 2nd time GM paralysis. My first GM experience was a miserable attempt at Call of Cthulhu 30 years ago, but the scars are deep…
Your work has inspired me to “want” to put together a sheet for Meddling Kids that features a haunted house theme, but who knows when I’ll get to it–it took me 2 months to do the BFRPG one, and you had already done all the heavy lifting.
