Traveller Starter Set
In case you missed it, GDW has put the classic Starter set for classic Traveller up for free at RPGnow/DTRPG.
All three booklets (the edition I first owned, without the XP rules of course, which I discovered only after three or four games) are yours to download for absolutely nothing.
Sure, as mentioned there are a few bits missing from Classic Traveller, such as
- Archaic Firearms
- Experience
- Drugs
But it is a 99% complete game, and really most characters never get many chances to use any XP they pick up along the way. 😉
So grab a copy before they put the price tag back on it on January 1st.
This is an excellent system, and doesn’t deserve the name Starter Kit. Everything that makes Traveller what it is is inside including Term-based character generation, trade, world, encounter, subsector and starship generation – it’s on pages 10 and 11 of the Charts book.
While there’s no archaic firearms (no muskets, flintlock pistols or blunderbusses!) there are Revolvers, Carbines, Shotguns and SMGs. If shouldn’t be difficult to make up stats using those as a guide.
Highly recommended. Everyone should play Traveller at least once in their life 😀
Absolutely.
More than just once, IMO. A truly great game.
The starter set is essentially the same set of rules as the hardcover The Traveller Book. I highly recommend getting this great rule set for free.
Over decades of playing Traveller through various editions, the only hardcover edition I’ve ever actually owned has been the recent Mongoose one.
Thanks for the heads up!
My first experience with Traveller was with MT. I recently bought the reprint of the first revised rules, it is still a neat and usable system. I got the PDFs if we ever get around to playing Traveller again I could print the various tables from them.
Thanks again.
I’m still a MegaTraveller fan. I feel it was the best of the systems to date, although I love the chargen from Mongoose’s edition. But classic Traveller is just so … pure and clean.

Thanks a lot. After hearing about this from RPG Circus I decided that it was a must have. Glad to have it now!
So, so excellent. Thank you for posting the link!
