Two birds with one stone! My first post in the A to Z challenge is of course a Friday Map, perfect for this month’s RPG Blog Carnival.
Some time ago, I started this map blindly, and then was suddenly inspired by this piece from a Heavy Metal magazine…
A lot of my maps start out like this – I just put pen to paper and after I’ve got a bit of the place mapped out, inspiration for how the rest of it should work just hits me out of left field and I keep mapping. Then I name the map and typically stash it in a folder and forget about it until something in-game makes me think of the name and that triggers me digging it up to use for an adventure.
The end result is sadly only my second post-apocalyptic map posted to the blog, The Rad Ruins!
WOOOOOT!!! I have waited so long for this!! I LOVE IT! PA Maps are so few and far between, and your drawing style in a PA Map is perfect. This one’s gonna be a big hit, methinks.
Awesome! Love maps.
Is there a hope for more b/w printer friendly version?
Not a lot of hope right now. Once again, the source files were lost in the great crash, so I would have to rescan it to make a new version, and my scanner is screwing up something fierce.
Anyway thanks! Excellent map!
Happy A Day!
I’m a map person too. This is so cool!
I have three maps for my story – but they’re scribbles compared to this!
Dig the Rad Ruins! I actually just ran my first Gamma World session last night. If it becomes a regular thing, I now have at least one place to go to for inspiration!
This is awesome! Love the pipes. Will make great cover and concealment terrain!

Yeah, I love details that make a fight scene more… scenic.
I purposefully leave details like the pipes up to the GM to rule on. They could be elevated high enough that they don’t get in the way, or they might be low enough that you can either squeeze under them or crawl over them, or they could completely block up everything.
I’m not much of an RPG player — I’m more into German-style board games and their ilk — but as an artist and fan of maps, I like what you’ve got here. And I’m sure some of my friends would wholeheartedly approve. Keep up the good work!
Very cool! Do you recall what issue or story title the image is from?
Unfortunately, no. I scanned it months ago for a forum post (where I pointed out the many skulls drawn into the illustration, and the marshmallow wearing a tophat), and cannot recall anything more than it coming from Heavy Metal now.
Very nice. And perfect timing – I have a game coming up set in an abandoned golem factory. It’s fantasy rather than post-apocalyptic, but “dangerous magical aura” works just as well as “radiation”, and the dungeon is very nice.
