For myself, this is the iconic image of Cthulhu.
It originally appeared in the October 1979 issue of Heavy Metal magazine. It was my first exposure to the works of H.P. Lovecraft and I drew the head and tentacles on more than one occasion, including massively blown up on the cover of my grade 9 portfolio for my art class.
I’ll admit, at that point the wings did nothing for me.
You know. There is something very cool about this. It’s the perfect teeth I think, they highlight how strange everything else is and become stranger themselves by inclusion.
I have never seen this Cthulhu before. I love it.

D’oh, failed my SAN roll!
Participating on Lovecraft and Cthulhu Mythos discussions on roleplaying forums one thing that almost always pops up is that you can not grasp what the big C really looks like in it’s true form and all sort of talk about 4-dimensional being seen by 3-dimensional beings etc. Dispite this it’s always the same dude with wings and octopus for a head,
This I like. One dude looking at Cthulhu sees that other one something different. All they can agree is it being all too real being resembling a hallucination, monstrous size, tentacles and wings.
art by walt simonson i think.. i have this heavy metal magazine somewhere
