While the focus of my mapping work has been dungeons and similar sub-surface environments, I’ve been putting a fair chunk of work into making useable and yet believable fantasy city maps.

  1. Sooo good! I especially like what you did with the Esran’s Isle map.

    • Thanks, Greg. Esran’s Isle is one that I love because it came as a flash of inspiration and was my first attempt at a city map in decades.

And it worked. It is the inspiration behind the rest of the urban maps I’ve drawn since.

  2. i would like some side views ….or bird eye views…(Isometric??)…curious on your artist approach there…..where roofs and castle wall can be seen….. as you approach the city or town stand on a hill side…..before yee enter. imagine more work….but truly gets the imagination up a notch for artist and player….i always seem to sketch for my players….to give scale or theme

I have loved your maps since I fits saw them. I have refereed a game world that has run almost 30 years now, and I know how hard it is to design cities that seem like they’ve grown organically. Dwarves are probably the only folk who could plan a city AND STICK TO THE PLAN . . . everybody else needs a city that has roots. Yours have that feel. Very cool.

Your stuff is awesome and inspirational, both here and in the published source material. I use them with Maptools on a big screen tv at our game table. I would love to see you do street maps like you do for the dungeons. Even layouts of unique buildings you would find in a big city like you have for the taverns and inns page. Maybe even more Eberron style streets and buildings.

  5. I really like your city and castles. They are believable. so many seem like just an artficial collection of drawings

I find it curious that beyond Summerthorpe and Dunnsmouth none of the village and hamlet size maps has graveyards or cemeteries. Thinking of it 80% of the adventures that I have run has one or more scenes taking place in a cemetery or graveyard. Have you ever done a cemetery or graveyard isolated?
