Kevin Campbell

Mixed in amongst the various maps on the Dodecahedron are some brilliant pieces by Kevin Campbell. In order to simplify the process of finding these maps in the mix of however many maps I’ve posted of my own here over the years here are direct links to each of Kevin’s map posts (in chronological order).

Kevin used to draw Sci-Fi stuff as a kid, then got into AD&D in the early ’80s. A friend of his was studying architecture and had set a high bar with his dungeons, which Kevin followed. Ten years later he had taken a lot of figure/portrait classes and learned how to sketch.  Kevin IS old school, but doesn’t currently play RPGs at the time of this writing. Currently working as a draftsman he also built architectural models for a living and did home remodeling for a contractor when things were slow.

At the end of 2012, Kevin had a chunk of his older material from 1981-1983 archived at the PlaGMaDA site. His work has changed drastically since the 80’s however, during his rediscovery of fantasy cartography this year which break away from the grid in a radical and sketchy way.

  1. Tell us, who is Kevin Campbell? He definitely makes awesome maps. But why does he draw anti-grid but structured, organic, almost living maps?
Does he always use a pencil? No ink? Does he draw anything else? Does he play OSR games? Come on, Dyson, we wanna know!

  2. I guess I’ll field this one. Thank you MM for the complement. I used to draw Sci-Fi stuff as a kid, then I got into AD&D in the early ’80s. My friend was studying architecture and had set a high bar with his dungeons, which I tried to follow. Fast forward 10 years – I took a lot of figure/portrait classes (I used to have such a hard time drawing people) and learned how to sketch. OSR? ADHD and OCD yes. I AM Old School. Renaissance? No. I don’t play anymore. Currently, I am a draftsman. but rewind 20 years – I built architectural models for a living and did home remodeling for a contractor when things were slow. The anti-grid thing keeps me sane. A guy can only take so many 90/60/45 degree angles in his life. LOL. So, after scanning and posting my old school stuff to http://plagmada.org, I started looking around and found people still doing maps. So I’m doing maps again. No style, no plans. I’m just experimenting and trying do something unique. Pencil. I love it! Ink.? I might go there again. Pastel. Hmm…

  3. Just wanted to say that I really dig your maps, Kevin. Dark and completely out of the ordinary. Very inspiring!
