One of the classic elements of playing in M.A.R. Barker’s classic Empire of the Petal Throne setting was often adventuring into his very detailed and incredibly extensive Jakallan Underworld – being the ruins and temples and dungeons that span the areas under the city of Jakalla.

Having studied the original map I found it quite inspiring, albeit an artifact of the times (1975) with pencil-line-thin walls and nearly every square of the enormous area filled with halls, mazes and chambers.

But the inspiration has stuck with me and I’m now working on a similar map to go under a similar city. The goal is to produce something thematically similar to the maps of Jakalla and the Jakallan underworld that I can use when running an Empire of the Petal Throne (or other fantasy RPG) campaign, while producing something that is distinctly in my own style and genre.

This project has become, for the time being, My Private Jakalla.

Currently there are twenty-one maps in the undercity map, with more to come. I’ll try to keep this page updated as I add new maps to the city – typically at a rate of 1 per month.
